Are You Listening?

Book: Proverbs 1

“Wisdom shouts in the streets. She cries out in the public square. She calls to the crowds along the main street, to those gathered in front of the city gate:”

God’s wisdom is not just for those times when you are in a church service or in a spiritual gathering of some kind but it’s for everyday life. It is for when you are at home parenting your children and loving your spouse. It is for when you are at work dealing with difficult people and customers. It is for when you are at the store purchasing new shoes. It is for when you are making a legal decision such as someone asking you to co-sign for them. God wants you to use His wisdom in every circumstance of your life. Why? Because He knows the best way and the best pathway for your life. He wants you to succeed and reach your potential that He made you for. He loves you!

In this proverb one gets the sense that the street is noisy and there are many distractions. Even the place where there should have been wisdom, the city gates, the place where the leaders gave counsel and made judgments, wisdom still had to call out. There are times in everyday life when we need to make a decision and there seems to be so much noise of opinions and pressure that we don’t know what to do. In those times, God is still shouting out wisdom to you. Sometimes we need to quiet ourselves and listen to the voice of wisdom, His voice.

When our children were younger we would take them to the playground and often there were many kids playing on the equipment making lots of joyful noise. There would be many parents with their coffee talking to other parents. It was a social time for the kids and the parents. The one thing that amazed me was how parents, without turning around, knew the cry of their own child when they got hurt. Even among all the noise and distractions of the other children a mother could hear the voice of their own child. Why? Because they had spent many hours with that child and had heard their voice and cry many times.

As we train our ears to hear wisdom, by being in the Word and praying, asking God to give us wisdom, we will better hear the voice of wisdom. God’s plan is that His church would display wisdom (Ephesians 3:10). He is not trying to hide it from kingdom builders.

Having quiet time in one’s day is important to help get to know God’s voice and stay tuned to it. Take a few minutes each day to do this.
