Book: Proverbs 19
“Lazy people sleep soundly, but idleness leaves them hungry.”
Although some people would prefer that the principle of cause and effect did not exist, it does! Paul states it very clearly in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 where he says, “Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: ‘Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.’” The obvious understanding of this proverb is that if you spend all your time sleeping and being lazy you will go hungry but I think there is more.
There is a cause and effect in other areas of your life as well. If you are married and are lazy about your relationship with your spouse, not putting any energy into it you will suffer the consequences of boredom and conflict. The opposite is true as well, if you work on your marriage, as caring for a vineyard, you will be blessed with much fruit and joy.
If you are lackadaisical towards your spiritual life, not spending time with God reading the Bible, spending time praying and being with His people, you may find yourself drifting off unsatisfied with God, mad at God or even denying Him. But if you are eagerly spending time and energy with God, surrendering to Him and obeying Him, you will enjoy the fruit of the Spirit in your life some of which are love, joy, and peace.
God has given each believer spiritual gifts to be used. We are not to be lazy with them as He gave them so that the church would benefit from them. We benefit from using them in the ministry He has called us to by experiencing great joy. Some people do not experience the joy of the Lord because they have been lazy in obeying Him by not using their gifts.
Let us not be people who enjoy being lazy and miss out on all the good things and fulfilling things God has for us.
Take time before the Lord to see if there is any area of your life where idleness has crept in and needs correcting. Remember that He designed you to not be lazy but productive and enjoy Him.
