Don’t Be Captivated

Book: Proverbs 5

“Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman…?”

Another way of saying this is, “why allow yourself to be imprisoned by sin when God has given you freedom?” Galatians 5:13 says, “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters.” Succumbing to sinful temptation is putting oneself into bondage which restricts and destroys life. Each of us needs to be on guard against the temptations that lead to disobeying God and His wisdom. You may be tempted with sexual lust or lust of money while someone else may struggle with the temptation to gossip, be anger, be jealous, have selfish ambitions, have gluttony, be legalistic or abuse chemicals. All these things, if they capture you, steal away the freedom that Christ has paid for and given you.

Keith Green released a song in 1980 called ‘So You Want To Go Back To Egypt’ which tells the story of the children of Israel in the desert complaining and wanting to go back to their life of slavery in Egypt. There were many good lines in the song which I still remember. Instead of the Children of Israel focusing on the promised land which they would be able to claim as their own, giving them freedom and peace, they chose to complain about their conditions, leadership and God. They actually preferred the bondage they experienced in Egypt. The result was that the earth swallowed many of them up and they never got to enjoy what God had for them.

Sin is not a popular topic to talk about, with many people wanting to even deny that it exists, but it is what puts people into chains of slavery. It may seem like a little sin but it holds back the person from enjoying the freedom that God has for them. This is why it is so important to confess our sin before God and flee temptation. If you know what tempts you to sin, stay as far away from it and ask the Lord to help you. He is eager for our success but we have to be willing to agree with Him and follow His right ways.

Take time to confess before the Lord any sin that you are aware of in your life. Then ask the Lord if there are other sins that you have not identified that need to be confessed, then do so. Agree with God that He is right and invite Him to help you honor Him in all things.
