Book: Proverbs 7
“So listen to me, my sons, and pay attention to my words. Don’t let your hearts stray away towards her.”
Straying is done one step at a time. The first step off the path seems harmless as “it isn’t really off the path, it is just beside it!” Then the next steps take one further away from the path, “but you can still see the path.” More steps and the thinking is, “I know the path is somewhere over there”. Finally the steps have led to the point of being lost.
Now let’s wind the tape back and consider why the first set of steps were taken and then the next and next. There was a distraction from the safe path to something else. Safety and wisdom were set aside to focus on something that was appealing. Instead of focusing on going down the path to destination, something else became more important. The plan to of follow the predetermined path was set aside to focus on the distraction.
Years ago when our boys were small we took them hiking on a boardwalk through a bog. Since there were danger signs warning against stepping off the boardwalk we explained to our sons that they needed to stay on the boardwalk at all times. They must not step off, even if they saw something interesting that they wanted a closer look at. There were places that looked like solid ground but was really only vegetation growing on top of water. Down the path we went. One of my sons had a ball with him which he dropped and it bounced off the wood into the bog. He instantly, stepped off the boardwalk to retrieve his ball. We immediately called to him to stop and walk back exactly the way he had come. We were thankful that he made it back to the boardwalk, safe without falling in (Yes, he got his ball back as well). He had heard the warning before the walk had started but for an instance lost his attention to what would keep him safe and strayed off into danger.
We need to each guard our heart from straying away from the purpose and call God has given us through His word. Joshua 1:8 says “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Psalm 1:1-2 says, “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night.” Make sure you listen and pay attention to God’s word consistently.
