Book: Proverbs 17
Proverbs 17:27 A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.
My father was a person of few words. He believed that he shouldn’t give advice unless somebody asked. I didn’t always ask but when he spoke I listened. He spoke calmly too, never in a condescending way.
He was the first person to share Jesus’ words of wisdom with me. It was the golden rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. I took those words to heart and as a child I tried to live that way, the teenage years not so much but then after that, I made the effort again.
I was the science major in our family but still remember the simple key of understanding my father gave me as I wrestled with one of the scientific theories. He definitely was the go to person for physics too! He not only spoke wisdom but he also modeled wisdom in his life.
In James, God gives us advice for living this way. He tells us to put off those things in our lives that defile us and to listen to, read and accept God’s word by faith. Our lives including our soul (mind, emotions and will) will be transformed!
James 1:19-21 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
