Get and Love Wisdom!

Book: Proverbs 4

“My Father taught me,…Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you.”

There are two key words with regards to wisdom in this proverb and they are: 1) Get and, 2) Love. Each of these words help us to understand the importance of it and what we are to do with it. To get wisdom but not to love wisdom will result in failure. Trying to love wisdom without getting it first does not work either.

Consider the proverb “The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the LORD.” (Proverbs 18:22) Notice first that a wife has to be found and secondly that she is a treasure. The man could dream and think about a wife but that is not going to do any good until there is action. Secondly, he needs to love his wife and care for her for him to benefit from the marriage.

Since we are challenged to ‘get wisdom’ it must mean that we do not naturally already have it. We need to seek it out and receive it. The word ‘get’ means to acquire or buy something that is extremely important and necessary. There is a sense of urgency and high value in going after it. Get it at all cost (Matthew 13:44-46). This is why we need to be seeking after God daily asking for His wisdom.

‘Love wisdom’ brings out the aspect that it is more than just head knowledge but goes deep into the heart. It is heart wisdom that affects our moral choices in doing what is good and right. Loving God’s wisdom in our hearts protects against all that we might face. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 says, “He (Satan) will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.” We need to understand that we are in a battle and Satan is out to destroy us. He is seeking who he can devour. Our protection is loving God’s wisdom, loving His truth, and loving Him as we were made to do.

Let me encourage you to actively seek God’s wisdom and allow it to go deep into your heart so that it will protect you and you can enjoy it! Get and Love Wisdom!
