Book: Proverbs 19
“If you stop listening to instruction, my child, you will turn your back on knowledge.”
Children come into this world listening and learning. It is natural for them to learn and increase in knowledge and ability. What a tragedy it would be if a young child stopped learning how to feed themselves, walk or even learn to interact with others. The same is true for adults. What a tragedy it is when a ‘grown up’ stops learning.
Just like that young child, who for the first time, is trying to navigate yogurt on a spoon towards their mouth and ends up covering their face with it, so too adults sometimes struggle with learning. It is okay to struggle and not succeed the first time. Trying is an important step.
I watch my wife study regularly to increase her knowledge as a pharmacist. She has been in the field for more than 25 years after going to university and getting her pharmacist license. In her field, it is required that pharmacist’s continually take courses and attend seminars. She also is an accredited women’s menopause practitioner which requires further studying as well. But she also has other interests that are not directly related to her career such as studying God’s word. She has made the choice to keep learning.
There are many reasons we can come up with for not continuing to learn such as “I am a slow learner,” “I can’t read”, “I don’t have time”, “I’m too old (or young)”, or even “I’m tired of learning”, but life is about learning. God has given us the ability to learn and He has so much He wants us to learn. I see Octogenarians who have not necessarily had an easy life but they are still learning and enjoy learning.
First of all, we all need to be learning more about our Creator and the great love He has for each one of us. He desires that our relationship with Him would grow daily and that can only happen by listening and learning from Him. Second of all we should be developing our skills, gifts and abilities. Thirdly, we can also learn about other things that we enjoy doing.
Take time to consider what your attitude is towards learning. The fact that you have read this Kingdom Daily Wisdom suggests that you have a desire to learn. How are you growing in your walk with God? How are you increasing your knowledge in the field you are working in? What have you learned lately with regards to one of your hobbies?
