Book: Proverbs 2
“My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands”
The term “My child” used here reminds us that God is our loving heavenly Father who is giving us treasured commands (wisdom). He calls us to put a high value on what He gives us. Since He is willing to give us these treasures, he is also saying, “I trust you with them”.
As a father of three incredible sons I want to pass on to them and provide opportunities for them to prepare for the day they leave to start their own home. When our first son was still a baby my wife and I sat down and discussed what were the skills and activities we wanted all of our children to have and the training they would need. Since we live near water, swimming lessons were a must. Piano lessons also were included so that they would have a good solid foundation of music. Thirdly, when they turned 16 they would be given professional driver training.
I remember the day my son received his drivers license and took the family vehicle solo for the first time. I was a little nervous trusting him with the family’s vehicle but at the same time expected he would drive carefully. He had been told/trained (or commanded) in how he was to use the vehicle and the rules of usage.
God has been training and teaching us as well. He has given us His living manual (the Bible) and expects that we will treasure it by applying what He says into our daily lives. We need to be like a little child who is soaking up so much new information but also taking good care of it and using it for our Father’s glory.
Do you have a child like attitude towards your heavenly Father? Do you listen to Him and then treasure what He says? He has so much He wants to teach you, show you and walk you through. Invite Him into your day and ask Him to steward well the treasures He has given you.
