Book: Proverbs 10
“The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.”
Each day when we are with people, we open our mouths and words come out just like a fountain. Those words will bring praise, encouragement and help or destruction, discouragement and disappointment. What makes the difference? Is it the fountain or what flows through the fountain? The key to the answer can be found in the word ‘godly’.
To be godly, one needs to fear God by obeying Him and loving Him. The closer we grow in our relationship with Him the more life-giving words can flow through us touching others in need. Once a word is spoken it can not be retrieved so we need to have life-giving words coming out of our mouth.
If the words are not life-giving then they are death-giving. Notice that there are only two types of words. Now this may seem strange until we realize that there is more to communicating than just the raw words. The tone of voice, our body stance, the emphasis on a word, timing, and facial expression, are all ways that we communicate.
Consider an adult who is teaching a student how to add numbers. If the student picks up that the adult believes they can learn to do the task, presents it in an age relevant way, uses a soft, encouraging voice with a smile, the environment for growth and learning is in place. Compare that to an adult who keeps speaking down harshly to the student and doesn’t believe they can learn. That poor student is going to have a rough time learning, if he even can.
The source of what flows through us will determine the results of our words. Choose today to allow God and His wisdom to flow through you bringing life to others.
